About Stephan Hellmig

Stephan Hellmig, MD, PhD, FACP, FEBGH, is a Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology at the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville. His clinical expertise focuses on advanced interventional endoscopy, including ERCP and EUS, as well as the management of complex inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Dr. Hellmig earned his medical degree from the University of Lübeck, Germany, where he also completed his doctoral thesis. He subsequently obtained his habilitation (venia legendi) in Internal Medicine at the Christian-Albrechts University of Kiel and was appointed Adjunct Professor (apl.) of Internal Medicine. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein (Campus Kiel), one of Europe’s largest academic tertiary care centers.

Dr. Hellmig believes that treatment should be tailored to fit the patient’s life, rather than requiring the patient’s life to revolve around the treatment. This is particularly important in the care of patients with inflammatory bowel disease, where treatment must be highly individualized to each patient’s needs, goals and circumstances. He places the patient at the center of every medical decision and views patients as active partners in managing their health. By combining evidence-based medicine with a deep understanding of the individual patient, he strives to achieve the best possible medical outcomes while preserving quality of life.

He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology in Germany and holds European board certification in Gastroenterology. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP) and the European Board of Gastroenterology and Hepatology (FEBGH).

Prior to joining the University of Florida, Dr. Hellmig served as Chief of Gastroenterology at multiple high-volume tertiary referral centers in Germany and as Director of Endoscopy at the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein (Campus Kiel). He also founded and led a comprehensive interdisciplinary IBD program, providing personalized, biologics-based care for patients with complex inflammatory bowel disease.

Dr. Hellmig has authored numerous peer-reviewed scientific publications in gastroenterology and internal medicine and has presented his research at national and international scientific meetings. His work has also been cited in patents filed by leading academic institutions, research organizations, and biotechnology companies worldwide, reflecting its translational impact beyond the scientific literature.
