About Atul Kumar
I am dual board-certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, bringing over 20 years of distinguished experience following completion of my fellowship at Emory University. My clinical expertise focuses on ERCP and EUS procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of complex hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases. I have conducted peer review funded, investigator-initiated clinical trials for drug therapy of arteriovenous malformation-related GI bleeding and randomized trials for biliary interventions. I have pioneered the development of expert systems for gastrointestinal conditions, and formally served as a PhD thesis advisor to Dr. Adrienne Chu at Stony Brook University’s School of Applied Mathematics. The American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy’s (ASGE) awarded me the Crystal Award, their highest research honor consecutively in 2004 and 2005. I have served on the FDA Gastrointestinal Drugs Advisory Committee (AdCom) from 2010 to 2016, including a term as Chair. I have a MBA from UNC Chapel Hill (1999-2001) and was enrolled in the Safety, Quality, and Informatics Leadership fellowship at Harvard Medical School in 2018. This combination of clinical mastery, research innovation, and leadership experience positions will enable me to advance the GI division’s mission of excellence in patient care, education, and scholarly discovery.
Teaching Profile
Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy centers on promoting curiosity, innovation, and collaborative discovery. I have consistently engaged trainees and colleagues in translational research that bridges technical excellence with scientific inquiry, as evidenced by publications spanning endoscopic techniques, artificial intelligence applications, and clinical outcomes research. I believe effective teaching occurs at the intersection of clinical practice and investigation. By involving fellows and residents in diverse research projects—from developing AI-driven expert systems for gastrointestinal bleeding to pioneering novel endoscopic techniques, such as wire-guided cannulation, which reduces post-ERCP pancreatitis (PEP), a morbid and costly problem, to EUS-guided interventions —I create experiential learning opportunities that foster critical thinking and scientific rigor. These collaborative efforts, reflected in publications across premier journals including Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Endoscopy, BMJ, and The Lancet, demonstrate my commitment to nurturing the next generation of clinician-investigators. My approach emphasizes hands-on mentorship, where trainees are co-authors and co-investigators, rather than merely observers. I challenge learners to question established paradigms, as exemplified by our work redefining post-ERCP pancreatitis criteria and exploring machine learning applications in clinical decision-making. This philosophy has consistently yielded publications in which trainees contribute meaningfully, developing skills in research design, data analysis, and scholarly communication. Ultimately, I view teaching as cultivating intellectual curiosity, technical mastery, and the courage to innovate—qualities essential for advancing the field of gastroenterology and improving patient care.
